Trauma Therapy for Interpersonal Violence

Healing from the Impact of Violence

Every day, we see reports of violence in the news—and for many, those stories are more than headlines. Whether experienced firsthand or witnessed, violence can deeply affect the way we think, feel, and relate to the world around us. Its roots are complex, and its impact can linger long after the event itself.

Survivors often find themselves grappling with painful memories, overwhelming emotions, and the challenge of moving forward while trying to make sense of what happened. It’s not uncommon to encounter different forms of violence at various points in life, each experience leaving a unique imprint. These experiences can influence our sense of safety, self-worth, relationships, and even the way we process everyday situations.

At Reset Wellness Center, we understand the lasting effects of violence. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where healing begins—where you can regain a sense of peace, reclaim your voice, and move toward a life rooted in strength and hope.

Understanding the Impact of Trauma and Violence on Your Emotions and Behaviors

Many of your emotional responses and behaviors may be natural reactions to trauma or violence. Depending on your experiences, violence can trigger a "survival mode," making you hyper-aware of your surroundings and defensive. This instinctive response helps you prepare to ‘fight,’ ‘freeze,’ or ‘flee,’ in order to protect yourself.

While this survival mode is necessary for immediate safety, it can affect your mood, outlook, and sense of control. You may struggle with impulse control, such as overeating, shopping, substance use, or avoiding certain people or situations. It’s common to experience self-blame, disturbing dreams, or sudden emotional shifts. Even small negative events can provoke strong emotional reactions. In some cases, these reactions can interfere with daily life and responsibilities.

Trauma doesn’t stay hidden for long—it finds ways to surface. But surviving interpersonal violence doesn’t have to define your life. Therapy offers a chance to understand your reactions and find healthy ways to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Through therapy, you can learn about common reactions to trauma, recognize the links between your thoughts, feelings, and actions, and develop effective coping skills to manage stress and emotions. Positive outcomes of therapy include building mental and emotional resilience, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem, enhancing communication and relationships, and discovering new possibilities for a fulfilling life.

“There is strength in being vulnerable.”

Steven Berkowitz, Trauma Specialist

Therapy is a deeply personal and unique process. With your therapist, you will set individual goals and work toward healing and growth. Through this journey, you'll build trust, share your story, and learn new coping skills. While these positive changes can be empowering, they may also bring up feelings of vulnerability, which could trigger your "survival mode" reactions.

It’s important to have a stable support system in place—whether through medication management, substance abuse counseling, or other resources—to maximize the benefits of therapy. You’ll find greater success in therapy if you begin from a place of stability. Does this sound like where you are right now?
